Government Takedown Requests
In 2022, Apple removed a total of 1,474 apps from its App Store in response to various government requests. The majority of these removals, a staggering 1,435 apps, were from mainland China. In contrast, India requested the removal of 14 apps.
Requests from Other Countries
According to Apple’s ‘2022 App Store Transparency Report,’ the government of Pakistan requested the removal of 10 apps, while Russia requested the removal of seven apps for violations of local laws.
Appeals and Restorations
Globally, there were 18,412 appeals of app removals, with China leading at 5,484 appeals. India submitted 709 appeals, resulting in the restoration of 24 apps. By the end of 2022, Apple had a total of 1,783,232 apps available on the App Store.
App Review and Rejection Statistics
Throughout the year, Apple reviewed 6,101,913 app submissions and rejected 1,679,694 for violating App Store policies. However, 253,466 apps were approved after initial rejections. Overall, Apple removed 186,195 apps from the App Store in 2022.
First Transparency Report
This transparency report is the first of its kind, published as part of Apple’s $100 million settlement with App Store developers in 2021. The report reveals that games, utilities, and business apps topped the list of removals, with 38,883, 20,045, and 16,997 apps removed, respectively.
Developer Accounts and Fraud Prevention
The total number of registered Apple developers on the App Store reached 36,974,015, with Apple terminating 428,487 developer accounts for policy violations in 2022. Additionally, Apple announced that its App Store prevented over $2.09 billion in potentially fraudulent transactions last year. The company blocked nearly 3.9 million stolen credit cards from being used and banned 714,000 accounts from transacting again.
