Revitalizing Heritage: Medical Center Bles
A Historic Metamorphosis for Community Health
Situated in the heart of Laken, Brussels, the former horse stables of the ‘Hollandia’ dairy factory are undergoing a remarkable transformation into a vibrant medical neighborhood hub. Designed by OFFICEU architects, the project breathes new life into the aged structure, now housing a general doctors’ practice, paramedical zones, a polyvalent space, and a versatile circulation area. As the first phase concludes, the endeavor is set to redefine community healthcare in the region.
Architectural Symphony: Heritage and Modernity
The second phase, slated for early 2024, promises to further unfold the potential of this historic locale. The existing twin elongated structures, characterized by wooden trusses, stand testament to 20th-century architecture. OFFICEU architects seamlessly infuse the industrial heritage with modern functionalities, creating distinctive pockets for each aspect of the project. The vision is not merely medical; it aspires to become a community focal point, offering a spectrum of health-related services.
Laken: A Tapestry of Past and Present
Laken, once a rural haven on the outskirts of Brussels, underwent an industrial revolution in the 19th century. The landscape today mirrors the stark contrasts of this historical metamorphosis, with social housing juxtaposed against industrial remnants and artistic echoes of royal embellishments. The ‘Hollandia’ dairy factory’s horse stables, now a silent relic, encapsulate both the rustic and industrial facets of Laken, embodying the village engulfed by Brussels’ urban sprawl.
Architectural Intervention: Respecting Roots
OFFICEU architects adopt a reversible intervention strategy, preserving the inherent character of the building. The structure, with its original brick floor, rugged wall finishes, and traces of horse boxes, retains the essence of the past. A strategic inner street becomes the backbone, preserving the tangible memory of the place, inviting reflection on its rich history amidst a continually changing urban landscape.
Enfilade of Spaces: Community Integration
The medical practice aspires to be more than a healthcare facility; it envisions integration with the neighborhood. The enfilade of spaces, connected to the inner street, becomes a flexible framework for diverse community programming. Beyond medical services, the focus extends to initiatives fostering cohesion among different age groups, poverty reduction, and social inclusion. The project aims to create a caring community, recognizing the profound impact of a supportive environment on well-being.
Spectrum of Health: Balancing Act
Acknowledging that health is a dynamic spectrum, the medical practice emphasizes a holistic approach. From traditional medical services to broader aspects of physical and mental well-being, the facility aims to cater to diverse needs. Each space, from private doctor’s offices to the semi-public inner street, is meticulously designed to support individuals across various points in their health spectrum. Buffer zones facilitate a seamless transition between public and private areas, emphasizing privacy while fostering human interaction.
Well-Being in Architecture: A Green Oasis
The building actively contributes to patient and doctor well-being. Natural materials, a soft color palette, ample daylight, and connections with outdoor spaces create a serene environment. Two strategically removed roof coverings form internal patios, infusing the structure with light, air, and greenery – reminiscent of the ‘atrium’ and ‘hortus’ in a Roman domus.
Medical Center Bles, a harmonious blend of heritage and contemporary design, stands poised to redefine community healthcare, not merely as a facility but as a dynamic and caring hub for the residents of Laken.
