Revitalizing Urban Spaces City Lounge of Zhongshan Road by The Design Institute of Landscape and Architecture China Academy of Art
Located at the heart of Jiaxing’s old city on Zhongshan Road, the City Lounge project by The Design Institute of Landscape and Architecture China Academy of Art transforms an urban debris space into a vibrant community hub.
Project Overview
The City Lounge project is part of Jiaxing’s old town remodeling plan, aiming to preserve the area’s heritage while injecting new life into its urban fabric. It incorporates Jane Jacobs’ “street eye” concept, fostering public engagement and celebrating the complex and diverse life of the old city.
Architectural Design
The project site, characterized by disorder and fuzzy boundaries, features four lush camphor trees. The design preserves these trees as focal points, creating three courtyards that integrate seamlessly into the irregular site layout. The entire roof structure is designed to lie under the shade of these trees, blending the built environment with natural elements.
Structural Elements
The architectural space is surrounded by a three-dimensional streamline of stairs and ramps, inviting public interaction. Heavy wood grain concrete and light metal mesh along the street side enhance visibility and curiosity, guiding visitors through the space.
Functional Spaces
Upon entering, visitors encounter a concrete-rolled entrance that sparks curiosity and leads them through a predefined walking route. The roof terrace offers a cool shaded space under the trees, overlooking the bustling Zhongshan Road. The courtyard, with its shallow water feature, ensures a safe and enjoyable environment for children.
Community Engagement
The City Lounge includes a functional venue for small-scale community events and an open stepped reading space with a whole book wall and reading platforms. This space, symbolizing “Jiaxing rice dumplings,” integrates with the roof to form a triangle, highlighting regional characteristics and providing a unique gathering spot for the community.
