Bridging Urban and Tranquil: Blue Bottle Coffee Fukuoka Tenjin
Blue Bottle Coffee Fukuoka Tenjin Cafe, designed by CASE-REAL, represents the coffee chain’s first foray into the Kyushu region. Located within the Kego Shrine precincts in the vibrant Tenjin area of Fukuoka city, the cafe occupies a unique position. Situated between a bustling street and the serene shrine approach, the cafe serves as a nexus bridging the contrasting elements of the urban landscape and the tranquil shrine surroundings.
Spatial Design Concept
In crafting the interior design for this contrasting environment, CASE-REAL prioritized creating a seamless transition from the bustling street to the serene shrine approach. Central to the design is the placement of the kitchen at the heart of the space, serving as a symbolic centerpiece reminiscent of Blue Bottle’s identity. Surrounding the kitchen, functions such as the drink counter and storage are centralized, forming a visual link between the two pathways around the cafe.
Addressing Height Differences
A notable feature of the site is the height difference of approximately 50cm between the shrine approach and the street. To address this, the design incorporates a gradual elevation towards the shrine side. This elevation shift creates a dynamic space on the street side with standing areas, while on the shrine side, it fosters a more tranquil atmosphere with sofa spaces. This thoughtful approach ensures a harmonious transition between the cafe’s interior and its surrounding environment.
Material Selection and Atmosphere
For the main materials, CASE-REAL chose Extruded cement panels commonly found in urban architecture, echoing the urban ambiance of the street-facing side. By staining these panels in a light beige tone while preserving their texture, the design achieves harmony with the shrine’s surroundings. Complemented by walnut wood accents, the interior exudes a warm and inviting atmosphere, inviting patrons to relax and enjoy their coffee experience. The careful selection and combination of materials aim to create a seamless blend of urban and tranquil elements within the cafe space.
Creating a Sanctuary
Blue Bottle Coffee Fukuoka Tenjin Cafe aspires to be more than just a coffee shop; it aims to be a sanctuary for people seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of city life while also welcoming those drawn to the tranquility of the shrine. By seamlessly integrating urban and tranquil elements, the cafe serves as a gentle link between these contrasting aspects of life, inviting patrons to experience a moment of calm amidst the vibrant cityscape.
