Hacienda by MuseLAB: A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity in Coimbatore
In the bustling city of Coimbatore, a serene haven of architectural brilliance emerges. The Hacienda, designed by Jasem Pirani and Huzefa Rangwala of MuseLAB, combines traditional Spanish hacienda elements with modern design principles. This project, MuseLAB’s most ambitious and largest to date, adheres to the ancient principles of Manaiyadi Shastram, native to Southern India, dictating specific sizes and layouts.
Integrating Tradition with Modern Design
Situated on a sprawling 39,400 square foot plot, the design contextualizes the home within Coimbatore’s geographical setting. Featuring charming courtyards, lofty arched openings, sloping roofs, and seamless indoor-outdoor spaces, the design pays homage to both Spanish and Chettinad architectural traditions. The 12,000-square-foot residence centers around a courtyard, connecting social areas on the ground floor, including an open-air pool, lounge, dining space, and family room, all set within meticulously landscaped surroundings.
Dynamic Spatial Interplay
The design emphasizes dynamic spatial interactions and thoughtful gestures. Jasem Pirani explains that the project focuses on showcasing the floor, forms (such as vaults), and selected elements within each space. Collaboration with local artists and craftsmen enriches the design, highlighting the creative use of light and space. The swimming pool, a 75-foot-long vault adorned with black and white mosaic tiles, stands out as MuseLAB’s most daring project.
Embracing Horizontality and Natural Landscape
The layout embraces horizontality, enhancing the natural landscape and creating a unique indoor-outdoor experience for its occupants. While inspired by hacienda design, the home also honors Chettinad vernacular architecture, evident in its central courtyard. Sunlight filters through skylights, creating an evolving visual experience as it bounces off the walls and floors.
Crafting Meaningful Gestures and Moments
MuseLAB’s design philosophy transcends mere visual style, focusing instead on creating meaningful gestures and moments. Inspired by intricate Chettinad decorative floors and Spanish tiles, the design employs restraint with pixelated pattern flooring in the courtyard. Bold expressions, such as the flamboyant floralesque tile around the pool vault, add captivating visuals. Larger marble pieces in the formal living room, stair foyer, and library evoke timeless sophistication.
A Continuous Conversation Between Spaces
Both architecture and interiors are part of a continuous journey, a conversation between spaces. MuseLAB’s collaboration with local artists and craftsmen infuses the home with authenticity and character. Bespoke furnishings and handcrafted details tell a story, adding depth and personality. For the homeowners, the Hacienda offers a transformative retreat, reminiscent of a cherished vacation.
A Beacon of Creativity and Connection
As the sun sets, casting a warm glow on the hacienda-inspired abode, it symbolizes the power of creativity and connection. MuseLAB invites exploration, dreams, and the creation of lasting memories in this beautiful and authentic home in the heart of Coimbatore.
