Pyunkangyul Flagship Store: A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity by Sherpa
Located in Bukchon, Seoul, the Pyunkangyul flagship store embodies the ethos of the herbal medicine skincare brand while intertwining elements of Korean tradition with contemporary design, courtesy of Sherpa.
Immersive Architectural Journey
The entrance path was deliberately lengthened, leading visitors through a transformative architectural walk to immerse them in the brand’s essence. Stepping stones were crafted from existing yard stones, symbolizing reuse and sustainability. The external façade embraces experiential elements, providing a serene environment that harmonizes with nature—a nod to oriental architecture principles.
Natural Materials and Sensory Experience
Natural materials dominate the store’s interior, subtly conveying the brand’s identity through the senses. Brass-cast wind bells, plaques, and handles engage auditory, visual, and tactile senses, setting the tone for a multisensory experience. Polyvinyl alcohol lights serve as environmental messengers, designed to dissolve in water, echoing the brand’s commitment to sustainability.
Traditional Inspirations
The design draws inspiration from traditional Korean elements, such as lantern-shaped lights and Hanji-infused décor, seamlessly blending heritage with modernity. Display areas feature Pocheon stone and mother-of-pearl-clad walls, paying homage to nature and tradition. Gansal doors and open windows erase boundaries between interior and exterior, fostering a symbiotic relationship with the natural surroundings.
Preserving Heritage
The store preserves the legacy of the building by retaining existing architectural features, including internal stairs and exposed walls. This commitment to sustainability ensures the seamless integration of old and new, allowing the raw charm of the original structure to coexist harmoniously with modern innovations.
Modern Interpretation
The second floor modernizes Pyunkangyul’s brand identity, incorporating elements like stainless steel shelves and cherry wood furniture. The exhibition space on the lower floor educates visitors on product ingredients and effects, while the rooftop offers panoramic views of Gyeongbuk Palace—a serene retreat celebrating Korean beauty and history.
In essence, Sherpa’s design for the Pyunkangyul flagship store not only reflects the brand’s values but also creates an immersive space that celebrates the intersection of tradition, nature, and modernity.
